Cloudy Day

The sky is overcast and a cool wind blows, hinting at rain, but not bringing it. Emily steps out onto the rooftop, looking around for a moment. At first, she doesn’t think anyone is there. She heads for the couch, intent on relaxing and watching her latest released anime. She stops, though, as she realizes that Reaper is sitting there, a glass in his hand. He looks up, a little smile on his face. “Hello, sweetheart,” he says. “You can join me, of course.”

She nods, dropping down on the couch across from him. He has a few holograms opened in front of him, and a holographic keyboard at his fingers. “Are you working?” she asks.

“Just making a few small investments,” he says, typing away. She nods, and taps on her comm, bringing up her favorite app and starting to watch her shows, the sound going straight to her earbud, so it doesn’t annoy him. It stays like that for a few minutes, with both quietly doing their own thing, until the door opens and Sandra walks out, heading to the couch where Reaper is sitting and dropping down on it.

“Gemstone, you’re home?” he says, looking up from his work.

“I’ve BEEN home for an hour, now,” she says, giving him a look.

“Ah, forgive me, sweet, I was enjoying the weather,” he explains, closing the holograms and looking at her. “How did your day go?” he asks.

“Fine,” she says, and then glances at Emily, hesitantly, “Dad… do you… ah… think you could teach me how to get into the Mirrorlands?”

“So you’re willing to try?” he asks. “I would be more than happy to teach you, but we’ll have to take it outside. Last thing we need is to be fried crispy.”

“Sure,” she says. “Em, do you… ah…” she hesitates as she looks at Emily.

“Have fun!” Emily says, waving them off. “I’m watching the newest episodes. I have to get them all watched before Mom comes home or she’ll yell at me.”

“Because you didn’t do your homework first?” Reaper asks.

“No, because I watched them without her,” Emily says with an evil little grin. The two are still laughing as they leave the rooftop. It goes silent, for a little bit, save for the wind blowing gently, ruffling her hair.

The door opens, and Nico steps out, stretching his arms over his head. “Not bad,” he says, looking at the sky. He looks at the couches, seeing Emily sitting there, and heads over, dropping down on the other one and kicking his feet up so he’s laying down. “Don’t mind me,” he says, closing his eyes. “Kodiak just… interrupted my sleep night.” He’s sound asleep the next moment, and she stares at him blankly for a second before shrugging it off and going back to her shows. She turns the hologram off a little while later and looks at the sky.

The door opens again, and Emily looks up, watching curiously as Evie peeks around the edge of the door before coming out, wearing a swimsuit.
